Field Notes

Description:

The Snowy Egret has all-white plumage with a slim black bill and long black legs with yellow feet. They stalk prey in shallow water, feeding on fish, crustaceans, insects and small reptiles. Rather than standing still or walking slowly to ambush prey, they dash through shallow water, quickly changing direction, and using their feet to flush prey from hiding places.

Habitat:

Southwestern U.S. south to South America. Both freshwater and saltwater habitats including salt marsh pools, tidal channels, shallow bays, and mangroves.
