Field Notes

Description:

This hawk wasn't very shy and landed on this gate only 10-15 yards away. Their wing span averages 20-28 inches from tip to tip.

Habitat:

This one was on the pacific ocean at the mouth of the Smith River in California near the Oregon border. Large numbers can sometimes be seen along coastlines and ridge lines as they move south in the fall. They usually nest in coniferous, deciduous and/or mixed forests. They can be found throughout North America.

Notes:

Large numbers of Sharp-shinned hawks are seen during migration. Over 11,000 were seen on one October day at Cape May Point, New Jersey.
