Field Notes

Notes:

Late last night I turned on the backyard lights and saw this black bear eating the birdseed I put on the ground. Then I looked over at my feeders where the bear had already been. The tube feeder pole was bent over and the feeders had big holes where the bear bit them. The bin feeder had been knocked over, but survived any real damage. So I guess it's time to stop feeding the birds until next winter:-)

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (11)

Jemma and Sergio, I see a nice variety of animals in my yard. But most of them I only see a few times a year. In Chicago when you see bears, you see 11 at a time:-)
It is amazing you have bears so near such a crowded area. (Although I know that there are bears in Chicago... ;-) )
What a wild place you stay in!!
Bears know that people are dangerous, so I had to be careful opening the window to photograph him, because any little noise would have scared it away.
Gilma, you have to stay inside when a bear is in the yard. If you go out, the bear will be scared and run off:-)
Conor, that might work, but I'd have to totally change the setup I have. Then I'd have the dozen gray squirrels in the feeders:-)
Carol, this one was a lot bigger than the one that showed up last spring.
