Field Notes

Description:

This large owl's size is partially attributable to its fluffy feathers. Still, it is a very impressive bird of prey. Its head is large and rounded. Predominant color is gray or grayish brown.

Habitat:

Boreal forests, although they may irrupt in some winters and move much further south to find food.

Notes:

This owl was photographed during the big irruption in the upper Midwest in the winter of 2004/2005. It was an amazing winter; sometimes I'd see 40-50 of these owls each day I went looking for them.

Thanks everyone. He/she had just jumped off a perch and smashed into the snow, presumably after prey that it heard scurrying under the snow. I don't think it caught it or I probably would have seen it. It just sat there for about three minutes before flying back to another perch some distance away.
