Field Notes

Description:

A medium-sized evergreen fern. I've been told that the nickname Christmas fern refers to its abundance during winter, and/or to the Christmas stocking-shaped pinnae. There are separate sterile and fertile fronds. The fertile fronds produce sori only on the pinnae near the end of the frond.

Habitat:

Found in moist woods throughout much of the eastern half of the US and Canada.
