Field Notes

Description:

Black and yellow striped honey bee. About 3/8 inches long. The bee is also known as the European honey bee. Bee is pollinating the flower of a Red Tipp Phontina.

Habitat:

Near flowering plants.
Backyard Habitat: The environment is a raised flower-Shrub bed which is dip irrigateed and free of pesticides. The plant behind the flower is a red-tipped photinia. The photina provides nectar as well as the flowers.

Notes:

Last fall our city sprayed malathion to control mosquitoes that carry west Nile disease. I closely observed before and after and did not see any increased mortality in our population of honey bees.
