Congratulations Malcolm! Your spotting has been chosen for Project Noah Fact of the Day: "Ever felt like a fish out of water? Mudskippers (family Gobiidae, subfamily Oxudercinae) are a particularly fascinating example of anatomical and physiological adaptation. Mudskippers are fish yet they are amphibious, which means they spend time both in water and on land. When underwater, they breathe just like other fish – by absorbing dissolved oxygen through their gills. When on land, they carry around their equivalent of a scuba diver’s air tank – a mixture of air and water in enlarged gill chambers. A mudskipper can on land also breathe through its skin and the lining of its mouth and throat, which must remain wet. This restricts mudskippers to humid habitats. Mudskippers are found in Africa and the Indo-Pacific, where they can frequently be observed feeding on land around mangroves and swamps, propelling themselves with their modified pectoral fins. Some can even use their pelvic fins as suckers to cling to rocks and roots!
