Dark Crimson Underwing
Catocala sponsa
42.5854, 18.2175
Field Notes
Description:
A medium sized moth, roughly about 4-5cm in length, of earthy colours mottled with black pattern above, making it almost perfectly camouflaged outside. In flight, rose-pink underwings are well visible. Here, against the white walls and under the flash, the intricate blackish pattern becomes more lively, and the moth appeared darker that it is (for comparison, check my previous reported spotting of this species here: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/611514683)
Habitat:
Here, seen during the night-time, and inside the house. Otherwise, this summer, seen few times in our garden. Located at outskirts of Dubrovnik, on lower slopes of Srdj mountain, the garden is terraced and covered in Mediterranean fruit trees and spontaneous vegetation. In spring, these terraces are overgrown in beautiful dense carpet of spontaneous Mediterranean herbs and melliferous flowers.
