Well, this started me thinking and I searched a little online. Turns out, the one by my house looks very similar to this, but it is a Common Screwpine (Pandanus utilis) from Madagascar. See here, scroll about half way down: http://tree-species.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
You are right Alice. As a mater of fact, there is one right down the street from my house, that I think is the same tree. Does it produce a large spiked green sphere fruit?
Looks like what you would see in Florida, wonderful sky color.
