Field Notes

Description:

Moth with a distinct pattern resembling Hebrew characters. Wingspan is wingspan 23-39 mm.

Habitat:

Maine to Florida; west to Ontario, Missouri and Texas. This one was observed near a mixed deciduous forest in Edgefield County, SC.

Notes:

Both common name "The Hebrew" and specific epithet hebraeicum likely refer to resemblance of the pattern to Hebrew characters. Larvae feed on black gum trees. Flies May to August; Hodges 9285
