Field Notes

Description:

A juvenile Greater Spotted Woodpecker determined by the red crown on peanut feeder

Habitat:

Garden backs onto mixed broadleaf woodland

Notes:

This 1000th spotting is very special to me for 2 reasons.
The first reason - The day after my dad passed away last June this young Woodpecker started coming to feed in my parents garden. Positioned for perfect viewing through their dining room window, every morning during breakfast my parents would watch all the birds visiting the feeders in their garden,
The second reason - One morning, a few days later, I could hear the woodpecker making a really loud distressful call, I dashed out and found the woodpecker in the jaws of a cat. Luckily the cat released it and although we did'nt see the Woodpecker back in the garden for a couple of days it soon started to revisit. So this spotting is in memory of my Dad

Wonderful spot! Congratulations on 1000 great spottings Viv!
Awesome spotting, Viv!! Congratulations on 1000 spottings! Spectacular achievement!
At the price of peanuts, I'd go broke before one of our woodpeckers found them! LOL
Congrats on 1,000! Great story and great pictures :)
Congratulations for this big, beautiful, round number - and, of course, for these great photos too. I loved them.
@ Karen, all birds can be very fussy. It is a known fact in UK that if you put out bird food from a supermarket it will last a very long time but if you put out food from the RSPB or other specialist suppliers it is gone in no time! The birds don't care what you paid for it, they just know what is good for them!
Congrats. On your 1000th spotting! Nice story! Thanks for sharing.
A great story behind a great spotting!
Touching story, glad the woodpecker was okay and came back. Congrats on 1000 too Viv!
what are you feeding? I never get any of our many woodpeckers at my feeders!
