Field Notes

Description:

Owl in an owl house. I will keep updating as the Spring Progresses.

Here is a video of the owl waking up in the evening. http://youtu.be/p-4_GizP4zg I used bi-aural mics so if you have earphones on you will get the best effect.

Notes:

This owl is one of two using an owl box I built in early 2012. It is hanging in a Camphor tree.

Check out a real Screech Owl Box maker! http://gargravarr.cc.utexas.edu/owl/

They are very elusive but I would look in large trees with open holes in them. Best to watch at dusk and look for them around and in the cavities.

You got some great shots Billy...really enjoyed the video too.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful owl with us. Loved the video, it put a smile on my face, beautiful pictures too :)
There really is no single proper size. The hole is the most important. Here is a tour of the one I build http://youtu.be/HxGiDMMP5KU and here is a guide http://myfwc.com/viewing/adventures/wildlife-viewing-at-home/cavity-nesters/
Any chance you can share the blueprints for your screech-owl nest box?
Beautiful spotting!! I'd love you to add this to the mission Raptors of North America (and any other spottings that apply): http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627557
