Field Notes

Description:

Garden Cross Spider (Argiope luzona Walckenaer 1841; Arachnida: Araneae: Araneidae) is a species of Orb-weaver spider found in the Philippines. Like other species of the same genus, it adds conspicuous, white zigzag silk decorations termed stabilimenta (singular stabilimentum) onto the central portion of the webs. In the Philippines, Argiope spiders are known as gagambang ekis ("X spider", due to the stabilementa), and gagambang pari ("priest spider", due to the spider's body resembling a priest's head with a mitre).

Habitat:

Makiling Botanic Gardens, a forest park of the Mt. Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (adjacent or within the UPLB-College of Forestry and Natural Resources), University of the Philippines at Los Baños, Laguna.
