Potter wasp's nest. There are a huge number of them, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_potter_wasp_genera. Yours may be zeta argillaceum.

Looks just like an urn. This was, no doubt, an early inspiration for a potter. One does not need to look too far to see how nature is the inspiration for all art and artifacts.
