Field Notes

Description:

The red back salamander is a small (5.7 to 10.0 cm) terrestrial salamander.
Males have a red back and females are all black.

Habitat:

Usually lives in forested areas under rocks, logs, bark, and other debris.

Notes:

Found under a rock with a female, although she escaped before I could take her out to get a shot. The male often played dead which made it good for taking pictures.
