Field Notes

Description:

This Curtain Fig tree is one of the largest in tropical north QLD. In the beginning, a fig seed is deposited by a bird at the top of a tree. It germinates and the roots find their way to the ground, eventually encompassing the host tree, hence the name 'Strangler Fig'. The host tree will die but the fig will remain. The aerial roots have reached 15m or 49 feet. Many tree ferns grow in the canopy of the tree.

Habitat:

Growing in rainforest outside Yungaburra, Atherton Tablelands QLD

Notes:

PS. There is a person in the 4th pic to give you an idea of the enormity of this magnificent tree.
