Bismarck Palm
Bismarckia nobilis
18.8969, -96.9978
Field Notes
Description:
Peculiar 4-sided Palm tree in the central park of Fortin de Las Flores, Veracruz, Mexico. I've never seen one like this before. It almost looks like a huge Venus Flytrap. Fortin de Las Flores is warm and wet all year.
Notes:
Bismarckia is a monotypic genus of flowering plant in the palm family endemic to western and northern Madagascar where they grow in open grassland. The genus is named for the first chancellor of the German Empire Otto von Bismarck and the epithet for its only species, Bismarckia nobilis. It is fire resistant due to a waxy coating on the leaves.
