Description:
The White-eyed Vireo is 13 – 15 cm in length. Its head and back are a grayish olive, and the underparts are white with yellow flanks. The wings and tail are dark, and there are two white wing bars on each wing. The eyes have white irises, and the face shows yellow-green spectacles around a spectacular white eye. Sexes are similar.
Habitat:
Breeds from Nebraska to Massachusetts, south to eastern Mexico and throughout Florida. Winters from the southern Gulf Coast to Central America and from coastal North Carolina, the Bahamas, and Bermuda to the Caribbean. Found in dense thickets, cypress swamps, and scrubby edges of roads, and ponds. Avoids urban areas but may be found in wooded parks near large cities. This spot was in the thickets next to a marshland in the western Everglades.
Notes:
The White-eyed Vireo is one of only two perching birds in the U.S. with white eyes.
