Field Notes

Description:

Also known as the Common or American Iguana. It is large up to 2m but usually around the 1.5m (5') range for big males and weighs in around the 9kg (20lb) range as an adult. They come in many different colours throughout their range but the ones spotted here in Brazil ranged from light to dark olive green with black mottling and stripes. They also have a row of short spines down the ventral line of the throat and down the dorsal line of their backs.

Habitat:

Mainly arboreal (see 2nd image) they also like to be near water, and are good swimmers. Thier range extends from Central America south to southern Brazil and through the Caribbean Islands. These animals seen in the Pantanal in Brazil.

Notes:

Although there seems to be a great diversity through the Iguanas range both in colour and form which lead to the belief of several sub species, DNA testing have showed them to be all of one species. However there does appear to be numerous regional races.
