Field Notes

Description:

My second spotting of this beautiful large terrestrial bird. This bustard is the size of a turkey, standing about 90 to 100 cm tall, of quite earthy colours and spectacular as it moved slowly.

Habitat:

Seen in Kunene region of Namibia (northwest), around Sesfontein town, in arid open acacia woodlands landscape. Very dry (but still magnificent and rich in wildlife) at the moment, following a three-year dry-spell.

Notes:

This is a South-African near endemic, and endangered species. It's been reported that it falls victim to collision with high-power lines in thornveld; but I heard stories about being also hunted for food.
