Field Notes

Description:

large stick insect flashing its wings

Habitat:

primary rainforest

Notes:

I spotted this stick insect by accident. I was showing my guide some roots growing down a tree to illustrate a story I was telling, when all of a sudden this stick insect opened its wings right beside the root. Both of us didn't even spot it until it did that. I've seen a lot of stick insects but it's rare to see them with their wings open.

Awww c'mon Dan! You didn't go to the Amazon you went to another planet!
I'm not sure either Karen, but thanks and thank you Carol. I was amazed by this as well.
I believe this is a male? The sticks I raised only the makes had full sized wings. Not sure if this holds true with all stick insects however...
So amazed by this spot. I never knew stick bugs had wings like a butterfly. Gorgeous!
Wonderful to catch it with it's wings extended! Beautiful!
Wow! Love it.
