Field Notes

Description:

Adults average 30-35 cm, but reach a maximum length of 43 cm. Above, a distinct reddish brown band runs along the centre of the back, flanked by a grayish band on either side of the body. There may also be broken black dorsolateral lines. the underside is usually cream to yellowish white, edged with black or dark grey dotted lines, so there is a light bank down the centre of the belly.

Habitat:

Preferred habitat: Largely a grassland inhabitant, but also found in moist savanna, lowland forest and fynbos.
