fungus with unique outline and rust color

Habitat:

wooded forest area

Notes:

I did not see any decaying of other plants/animals so was wondering what kind of fungus grows with no decaying matter around.

I am really out of my depth with this one, but my suggestion might be a starting point. There are one or two Project Noah members who are very knowledgeable in fungi and I think that they will probably contact you with some expert advice when the see your spotting. Nice picture ! John B.
