Field Notes

Description:

Except along the U.S.-Mexican border, this is the only tiny dragonfly with amber wings on the male. Size is typically 21-24 mm. This is a male.

Habitat:

Range is Eastern 2/3rds of the United States; range continues into Mexico. Ponds, lakes, occasionally the still areas of streams. Primarily a summer species; active all year in the far southern U.S. This one was photographed at the Silver Bluff Audubon Center near Jackson (Aiken County), SC.

Notes:

Food is tiny flying insects.
