Signature Spider
Argiope luzona

Field Notes
Description:
Argiope luzona (Walckenaer, 1841). The Signature Spider shown here is the same spider as that shown constructing a new stabilimentum in - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1020658364.... Before this spider can construct its new stabilimentum, it has first to remove the old one. So, in the early hours of the morning, usually around 03.00 to 05.00, the spider will be sitting in the centre of its web, quite motionless. Then it will suddenly start removing its old stabilimentum. It scoops it up surprisingly quickly, concentrating on one section at a time and carries it to the hub of its web where it deposits it, rather like a wad of cotton wool. Then this industrious spider diligently goes round and round its web, repairing or replacing any sections damaged by night-flying insects which sometimes have been caught and eaten or have punched a hole through the web and escaped. This web rebuilding process takes approximately an hour and the result is a pristine, precision-built work of engineering excellence which sparkles when the sun comes up in the morning. When this task is complete, the spider returns to the hub and consumes the white clump of silk from the old stabilimentum. That is, obviously, the part of the process shown here. I will try to put together a spotting showing the web reconstruction, if I can condense the proceedure into 5 or 6 pictures.
Habitat:
This spider was spotted in our backyard on its web which was moored to the stems of two old, dying banana plants.
