Field Notes

Description:

notable for the differences in the appearance of the sexes. The male is larger and stronger than the female and has a shorter straight beak. I've added some close ups of the wing, which were unfortunately from a dead specimen I found on the ground.

Habitat:

widespread and common

Notes:

Probably the second most common species of hummingbird on Dominica, out of the 4 species present. This little guy perched for me perfectly on a branch just above my head. I wasn't ready with the right lens when I first spotted it and when I changed lenses it was gone. However, I just waited in the same spot and it came back and landed right on the same branch and I was able to get some pics.

You got plenty of great bird photos and spottings for being there for just one day! My green-throated Carib isn't as nice as yours. I found those ones really tough.
Dan, even though the picture didn't come out well, I still got good looks at a new bird for me. I only had one day while the cruise ship was there, but we hired a local guide and found plenty of nice birds.
Thanks Tom. That's sucks about the lousy photo, I ended up with some like that too, but I had so much more time on the island, I finally had some good photo opportunities.
Very nice series! The only one I was able to photograph was in the shade and my shot is a black silhouette.
