Description:
This Kidney Garden Orb Spider has a wide distribution from India southeast to Australia. This species is one of the largest diurnal orb web spiders I have seen in Borneo, estimated about 11mm in length. This female has orange head, green legs, and white abdomen with black markings, including the distinctive oval kidney shape which derives it's common name.
Habitat:
Always stays inside it's silk retreat which is built on a large leaf like this large (possibly ixora) leaf. It's orb web (last picture) is built with a section missing. The silk strands at the missing section is linked to the spider in it's silk tent (try to spot it in the last photo)
Notes:
Hooray, the first Araneus mitificus spotting from Borneo. This is also the first time I have seen this species. They are pretty rare around here. >>>Map accuracy : 1km diameter.
