Field Notes

Habitat:

Found in a wildlife refuge in North Dakota. There is a wide variety of trees here which makes a good habitat for porcupines since most are picky eaters.

Notes:

This species is the only native north american mammal that has antibiotics in its skin. Porcupines frequently fall from trees while climbing the smaller branches to reach the young fresh leaves. The antibiotics help when getting stuck with their own quills after a fall.
