Field Notes

Description:

Evergreen creeping dwarf shrub, growing up to 10cm (4") tall. Leaves are 3-10mm long and 3mm wide. Flowers in small clusters of 4-5. Small pink flowers with 5 petals and dark pink centres. Fruiting body is spherical capsule 3-4.5mm long.

Habitat:

Grows in stony low bush tundra, boggy tundra and crowberry fields in Kamchatka, but is also found at higher elevations. Otherwise found throughout Northern Hemisphere in Arctic, sub Arctic and alpine areas.

Notes:

I found these in boggy areas growing in dense mats with high concentration of flowers in amoungst a plethora of other flowering plants and lichens. An amazing sight. See third image.
