Field Notes

Description:

Wasp nest to 12cms diameter. Nest was quite well hidden under the pine tree foliage. Had to look up underneath the branch to see the nest. Quite large wasps. Several sentries were aware of my presence (photo 3). I was conscience of the fact that they could sting me at any moment, so I didn't make any sudden movements to upset them. If you look closely at photo 1 towards the top of the nest you can see eggs in some cells and larvae in one.

Habitat:

Nest in small planted tree at Cattana Wetlands QLD

Thank you for clarifying. I will update
Hello Andrea. (Most) Paper wasps are colonial nesters and do not engage in the kind of Brooding behavior I have listed in the description of my mission "Brooding behavior in insects and other invertebrates" (Please see the mission statement). But I certainly welcome any of your spottings (usually not wasps) which do depict it! Thanks
Thank you Ava. Yes I was a little worried taking the pic so close. Was worried that the fill flash might anger him. As soon as I took the pic I moved backwards and no sudden movements :-)
Love the 3rd picture where you're eye-to-eye with the wasp.
