Partridge Berry
Mitchella repens
29.6792, -82.2093
Field Notes
Description:
A very cool little plant that has little red fruits formed from two flowers. You can see in photos 2 & 3 that the two flowers share a calyx. The two ovaries fuse and a single berry is formed from the flowers. The resulting berry has two spots because of this process, which you can see in the photos of the berry. I haven't ever seen the pinkish tinge to the flowers such as what you see in photo 2. The plant is also considered a non-climbing vine.
Habitat:
Forest near a flooded area at Newnans Lake Conservation Area
