Field Notes

Description:

Bluebells have adopted some interesting strategies to ensure their pollination. The flowers start out pink/purple due to the anthocyanins present, then alter their pH to the alkaline, changing to blue a more attractive color to pollinators, when they are ready for pollination. Additionally, once pollination occurs the flowers fall, so that only flowers requiring fertilization are visited.

Habitat:

Riparian-mixed woods
