Field Notes

Description:

Also known as red land crab, whitespot crab, mouthless crab or harlequin land crab. This colorful, nocturnal land crab digs burrows – sometimes as long as 1.5 metres (4.9 ft)– in the coastal rainforests of Central America, and is common along the coasts of Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua.

Notes:

Spotted these when the park ranger at Manuel Antonio National Park kindly took us around the park at night. We dreamed, of course, of spotting a jaguar, but instead we saw less glamorous, but equally interesting animals.
