Normally, Woodcocks stay on the ground and depend on their coloration to hide them from potential predators. When there isn't snow on the ground, they can be nearly invisible in the underbrush (until you spook them). They can fly but spend more time on the ground. They feed on worms (and other invertebrates) and their bills are specially adapted for this. Neat birds.
Thank you! I was filling up the feeders and suet after the snow and all the other birds had retreated to the canopy, but this one didn't seem to mind my presence.
