Field Notes

Description:

Scarabaeidae; Melolonthinae; Carlschoenherria sulcipennis (Laporte, 1840). I have taken pictures of this beetle many times over recent years. So I would be confident to say that it is not uncommon in our area. However, I have always had difficulty in identifying it. I have photos in my collection labelled Leucopholis sp., Phyllophaga sp., Unidentified Melolonthinae and some others. So you can see that I have had some fun trying to sort out this one. However, I am now confident that I have it right. I came across a Scientific Paper "Review of the genus Carlschoenherria (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) of the Philippines" at researchgate.net/publication/333880308 and it gave me all the information (and pictures) I needed to finally get it right. Thank goodness ! :-)

Habitat:

This June Beetle was spotted this afternoon on a Currant Tree (Antidesma bunius) in our front yard.

To: Mark Ridgway Good Evening Mark, thanks for the comment. I don't care if its warm in its coat. It made me sweat for years trying to ID it :-) Always nice to hear from you. John B.
