Field Notes

Description:

Member of the Dove family: Columbidae. 12 inches long (Over 30 cm). Pointed tail; black dots on wings. Male has light gray crown and iridescent sides of neck. Female is evenly brown on head and neck. Flying speeds up to 55 mph (88 km/h). Eats mostly seeds. Water and dust bathing is common. The species is generally monogamous.

Habitat:

Can be found in almost any open habitat including open woodlands, fields, farms, prairies, suburbs and urban areas also. Found next to Beltzville State Park, PA. Range: Continental USA, Southern Canada, most of Mexico, Greater Antilles.

Notes:

Also called Turtle Dove, American Mourning Dove or Rain Dove. One of the most abundant and widespread of all North American birds.
