Field Notes

Description:

Chick has silky chestnut and brown down and cares for itself.

Habitat:

Common in upland rainforest and schlerophyll forest. Uncommon in lowland forest, becoming rare in brigalow scrub. From Cape York To Gosford.

Notes:

I found this little guy in my yard running around trying to oinch the chooks food and being chased away. Have never seen an adult around this area but they must be here because here's the proof. Apparently not supposed to be this far south. I spoke to a local wildlife carer and she identified it right away. I released it back to the bush.

That's what happened here. He just appeared in our yard. I thought he was just a chicken at first from a distance but on closer inspection, knew it was something bigger. It was hilarious chasing it around with a net to catch it until I found out what to do with it.
Thanks for adding this to my mission Flora & Fauna of New South Wales. We spot these in our yard all the time & even though we see adults we rarely see the nest & they seem to just appear!
