Field Notes

Description:

A reddish-brown beetle encrusted with gold on the elytra. About 8 mm long and covered in short hairs. These beetles are predators. Family Cleridae.

Habitat:

Garden lights, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico 2,200 meters.

Notes:

This beetle feigns death when disturbed, falls to the ground and assumes a tucked position, with the head bent downwards and the legs and antennae pulled into the body. See last picture.
