Field Notes

Description:

This is a medium sized moth with brown and grey wings.The wingspan is about 30-40 mm.It had scales shaped like a mo-hawk on its thorax and head.They can blend in with the surrounding color like in this case with it sitting on a wood fence. At night they fly and hover around feeding on flowers and sap from trees.

Habitat:

Semi-urban, Fort Worth, Texas.

Notes:

This moth is in the family Noctuidae and is well known in North America for decimating Cabbage and other plants like Broccoli and Bok choy.They are called pests in many parts of North America and are killed for that reason. Sadly this species is not welcome in many gardens.
