Description:
Very large, heavy-bodied beetle, perhaps the largest beetle in the U.S. Note female has bulky body, but slender antennae compared to male.
Habitat:
Attracted to lights in a highly urbanized part of Tucson, Arizona. Typical of Sonoran Desert habitat with host tree (palo verde), mesquite, cacti.
Notes:
This species was formerly known as Derobrachus geminatus. Freshly-emerged adult beetles are dark reddish brown, becoming nearly black as their exoskeleton hardens completely.
