Thanks again Gilma! As for your suggestion, I'm still not certain... I think Phidippus is a good possibility, but I am having a hard time finding keys & reference to the species found in tropical regions of the Americas.

Thanks Backyardphotographer for the suggestion - The abdominal markings & the geographic range of this spider do not seem consistent with phidippus mystaceus.
