Field Notes

Description:

This male downy woodpecker sports the beautiful red cap on the back of the head, with a white breast and black wings with white spots. This species is sexually dimorphic in the fact that the males have this red patch on the head and the females don't.

Habitat:

These photos were taken just across the street from my house on a small property we own. It was pecking away on our mimosa tree.

Notes:

This is the first time I've actually photographed a downy woodpecker; I've definitely seen them before.
