Field Notes

Description:

A shrub in the honeysuckle family. Leaves are up to about 2 inches long, oval and finely toothed. Five-petaled, creamy white flowers appear in large rounded clusters. Stamens protrude prominently. The second picture includes a samara from American elm (Ulmus americana) that came to rest on a leaf.

Habitat:

Black haw tends to grow near water and requires some direct sunlight.
