Scarlet Bracket Fungi
Pycnoporus coccineus
-33.3817, 151.484
Field Notes
Description:
Orange internal structure, leathery dry skin. Unable to assess if the internal pitting is a part of the structure or signs of insect predation. Probably the latter. Probably 7cm across the larger fungal body. Outer skin is variable orange to black rusty looking although the black may be pollution or die back.
Habitat:
On the cut face of a Acacia or Casuarina stump. It is probably transported there on the blade of the chainsaw as spores from another site. It is one of at least threedifferent fungi on that branch and possibly the only one not endemic to the tree species
Notes:
ornage fungus march 14. Another good ID. Thanks Mark Ridgeway
