Spring beauty
Claytonia virginica
37.3021, -78.3919
Field Notes
Description:
A member of the purslane family, Portulacaceae. Flowers are about 1.5 cm across. The flowers are streaked with pink, though the color may be very pale or intense. I usually see these in moist woods in early spring. These were in a more open area. The petals were so reflective that it was hard to capture them with my point-and-shoot.The leaves are grass-like in appearance; this distinguishes this species from Carolina spring beauty, with has spatulate leaves.
