Gulf Flounder
Paralichthys albiguttata
26.0734, -97.2086
Field Notes
Description:
Flounders are a flat fish, meaning that they lay on their sides on the ocean floor. As they age, their right eye migrates over to the left side of the body, so both eyes are now on the top of their head. These are referred to as left-eyed flounders, there are also right-eyed flounders. The last photo shows the underside where you can see all the organs.
Habitat:
They are found in the Gulf of Mexico in relatively shallow water.
Notes:
We seined this fish up with nets, then kept it in a tray of water. The fish was out of the water for a few seconds so we could take pictures, then was returned to the Gulf of Mexico.
