Field Notes

Description:

Females are sparrow-like birds with a white band through the eye. This female was singing very loudly while the male hid in the brush calling, "Chak, chak, check."

Habitat:

Swamp lands near the track.

Notes:

First of year female.

No need to apologise J, I hope you had a lovely time in Florida? I think you're right as sexual dimorphism in birds species often with the male being the more colourful/decorated is quite common.
Hi Debbie! Sorry for the late reply! It must be something to do with the Icteridae and the Turdidae families! The species in these families are so sexually dimorphic, it is like seeing a new type of bird! Thank you for sharing!
There is a definite difference between the female and the male of your red winged blackbirds, much plainer and lacking that beatiful colouring to the wings that the male has.
