Field Notes

Description:

A small yellow and beige spider with spines on its legs nestled between rocks. It’s got a well-demarcated abdominal stripe.

Habitat:

Seen in the grass, not far from a waterfall.

Notes:

There's a sensitive plant in the foreground, which is known to retract at the touch (Mimosa pudica).

Tukup, I’d go ahead and post the suggestion because it looks good! The stripe on its abdomen, geographic range and the body shape make me sure that it’s the one. Thank you for the ID — one less unidentified spotting from way back when.

Hi Mauna. Just browsing some of your "unidentified" and came across this spider. Although this spider doesn't look like Wiki's picture, it does look like the picture here https://spiderid.com/spider/araneidae/neoscona/theisi/ The color is right and it is only found in Hawaii. Not sure enough to make an official suggestions, but it looks promising.

No worries, VineWorld. I didn't have enough zoom to adequately show the spider, so I can see why you posted that suggestion.

Quite welcome, glad I could help narrow it down. Hopefully you can come across another that is in a better position for its photograph. :)

DanielWhitlock, I think you're on the right track. I also noticed the characteristics you've mentioned, which seems consistent with Oxyopidae. This might also be a juvenile, which makes it hard to ID. It was pretty small, I'd say 1 - 1.5 cm. Thank you for your input. I'll update the ID to reflect that it's an unknown lynx spider.

I can't say for sure, but I wonder if it may be some form of lynx spider, family Oxyopidae? It has a raised carapace, seemingly spiney legs, a somewhat translucent green look that many of that family bears. What do you think? http://bugguide.net/node/view/1965/bg...

VineWorld, thank you for your suggestion, but my spotting is in the 'arthropods' category; if you look carefully, there's a spider that I'd like ID'd in the center of the photo. I've also already included in my notes that there's Mimosa pudica in the foreground. :)
