Field Notes

Description:

Large Geometrid moth with brown and greenish bark-like designs.

Habitat:

Came to an Ultraviolet light in the garden, semi-urban area on the outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

While not reported from southern mexico, it is reported from southern Texas and Florida. No records are given for Mexico, but it is likely to occur here as well.

I recently found that the Barberry is a source of orange dye. We might have the plant here. We have a local paper making group that uses a very strong orange coloring. All their materials are natural. I'll ask if they use that plant. (Taller de Leñadores, San Cristobal de Las Casas).
Thank you Fyn for the identification. It matches C. meadii very very well, although I can't find a record for Mexico. But too, the moths here are not well studied.
