Cossid moth
Endoxyla sp.
-37.8927, 145.314
Field Notes
Description:
About 50mm long this is a medium to small member of the genus in Australia with some of the largest and heaviest moths known.
Habitat:
Attracted to lights on the edge of a local national park.
Notes:
Although one common name for these is 'rain moth' I was surprised to find this as we are experiencing an extended dry period. Larva would have fed in eucalyptus or acacia trees. Also called 'goat moths' there are over a hundred species.
Yet to search for species...
http://bie.ala.org.au/species/urn:lsid:biodiversity.org.au:afd.taxon:51…
